When tradition meets modern

This is a late post about TongZhi (a Chinese festival that symbolize reunion in a family). Glutenous rice ball will be served on this special festival. Of course, nowadays you may bought it in any shopping center easily. So you may prepare the dessert below in anytime.

The Retro Glutenous Rice Ball

Ingredients:

  • Glutenous Rice Ball (Bought in shopping mall – peanuts flavor)
  • 400g red beans
  • vanilla ice-cream (can mixed with chocolates or coffee)
  • 150g sugar

Steps:

  1. Wash the red beans and cook it in boiled water (around 500 ml) for 20 minutes.
  2. Cook the red bean for another 1 hour. Add 1 cup of water every 15 minutes. (may varies according to the rate of evaporation of water)
  3. Add 150g of sugar in to the red bean soup and cook the red beans until soft and dry to turn it into a paste.
  4. Cool the paste. Blend the red bean paste. (For me, i would like to keep the red beans shape by not blending it.)
  5. During the cooling period of red bean paste, you may boil a pot of water to cook the glutenous rice balls. (The cooked rice balls will float up.)
  6. Place the cooked rice balls in a bowl of water (room temperature).
  7. Now, we have done the cooking part!!! We start to arrange everything on a small bowl.
  8. The red bean paste will be placed at the bottom follow by the rice balls. Lastly a scoop of ice-cream is covered on top.
  9. Fruits such as grapes, strawberries and kiwi may be a bonus to this dessert.

This eastern rice balls can served to your couple after a western steak. It sure will be an awesome surprise.
