Sharyn completed her Diploma in Advertising from Taylor’s College, and then left motherland to pursue her BA degree majoring in Media Studies and Anthropology at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. While waiting for her graduation in May 08, she interned briefly at M&C Saatchi Wellington, a global advertising firm. Upon returning to Malaysia, jobless and relieved of rent payments, Sharyn stumbled upon Wild Asia through The Star which sparked her interest to learn more about nature and environmental causes. Armed with a communications background, Sharyn works on the Wild Asia website and editorial, translating geek terms into laymen language, easily accessed and understood by visitors regardless of their backgrounds, be it scientific, business, the arts or just plain interested.

“Both my parents are Malay. My mum’s heritage includes Chinese, Thai and Arab, while my dad is Minangkabau. Due to my skin colour, I am often mistaken for a chinese.
I’m happy that I don’t have the typical Malay look but I do get annoyed when people call me Ah Moi or ask me straight up “Are you Chinese or Malay”

Like, why does it matter? Before I used to answer “Malay” but now I’m trying to consciously answer Malaysian instead..

There’s this incident from primary school that I remember till today. Someone told me that I will be called last during Judgement Day because I don’t have a Muslim name. Of course, I was scared then but now that I’m older, I realise that a name is just a name. It doesn’t define you as a good or bad person and there is definitely no such thing as a Muslim name. You can be named Rashid or ALI and still be a Christian.

I’ve heard of the 1Malaysia concept, but I think we don’t need to be told to be united. We’ve come such a long way that it should already be embedded in our hearts and minds that we are united. Unfortunately, you can still see racial discrimination and polarisation. There is still this ethno-centric view that the Malays are the dominant group and their rights must be protected, and non Malays are forever the outsiders.

For the concept to succeed, I think the government should stop with the race politics. It’s tiring, really. We grew up with application forms asking us to tick our race. We should stop painting a negative image of the other races, stop thinking about ‘us’ and ‘them’ and focus on ‘we’, ‘our’ and ‘Malaysians’.

No one should be made uncomfortable in their own home. A dear Chinese friend of mine said to me once, “I don’t feel patriotic because I am not made to feel like Malaysia is my home, and I don’t feel an affinity to China because I have never lived there..

I know some baby Nyonya friends who can trace their lineage back hundreds of years. I’m a fourth generation Malaysian.. If I am Bumiputra, why can’t they be, too? Clearly I have issues with the term.

I think the main reason why we still can’t achieve total unity is because of this ‘Malay rights’ concept. I’d rather ‘Malay rights’ be replaced by human rights. So unless we get rid of this Bumiputra status, or reform our views and policies on rights, we will never achieve unity.

For my merdeka wish, I’d like for Malaysians to have more voice, to be respected and heard. I wish that the government would uphold the true essence of parliamentary democracy. I wish for the people to no longer fear and discriminate against each other, to see that we are one and the same.

I wish that Malaysia would truly live up to the tourism spin of Malaysia truly Asia.

FUTURE – for someone who has a dream

This is from a Malaysian parent, educated in Malaysia, Singapore and live in Silicon Valley and have managed groups in high tech companies. Have paid/still paying tuition to Harvard, Stanford and Caltech.
During the course of my professional career, I have hired many engineers from the world over, many from top rank US universities. Whom you hire depends very much on what we need to get done. Sometimes a super technicians can do things a trained engineer has a hard time doing. So, qualification is important, but there are exceptions. However, a well trained engineer who has both theoretical training and hands on skill is hard to beat.
A common question in this forum is what are the prospects in a field, be it medicine, engineering, law, econs etc. We have to look at this from multiple perspectives, is the field getting saturated, how big is the field, how good can one be and whether that is what you want to do for the most part of your life. There is always room for the best person in a field, in an open economic system. So find out what you want and start developing skills in related areas.
Globalization enlarges the number of people participating in a field, you are no longer competing with people in your own country, you have to think in terms of global competitiveness and what can you bring to the global community. If you have that, your market is huge. If you do not have something special, you have to compete in cost (or service …).
For those aiming for the world’s top universities, do your best to get in, however, to shine in the top universities you need to have something you can be competitive in (there are people going for branding — I don’t think that should be your goal), a place you you can develop your skills and confidence in. Do not expect them to spoon feed you, if they do when you ask for water they may feed you with a water hydrant !
Medicine is a good profession, but there is plenty of opportunities in engineering, computer science if you are good at it. The problem with a lot of unemployed IT graduates in Malaysia is that a lot of them cost more (compare to India/China) and the standards are not very good. We have to move to the level of new product creation to gain the maximum benefit.

I may not be able to keep up with replies here, but I think there are many in here who can contribute too. The aim here is to share some of the experience here, to give the younger generation points of reference in their choice of goals/career.

I came from a relatively poor family in East Malaysia. When I was in primary school, I was one of those students who owed the school the $3 per month school fees for a while. My schooling was briefly disrupted during confrontation, almost drop out of school !
However, science/electronics always facinated me, I spent most of my pocket money on books and electronic components during my secondary school days. Read all the electonics megazines (Wireless World, Radio World etc) I could get my hands on. Through my friend who had a brother in university, got and read college physics and chemistry books when I was in F4 to F6. Got accepted in oversea schools/universities, but had no money to go. By Form 6, found out that the state government had no scholarship opening for electronics engineers, federal over sea scholarships were reserved for Bumis. Who need semiconductors ? I was a double math student, decided not to go for medic because of my interest in electronics. Had read a Bell Labs publiction on “The 10 Inventions that changed the world” , in Chinese. Little did the publisher knew that description on the invention of transistors changed my life.
Finally my familly got enough money to support me through MU/SU to pursue my interest. I went to SU, visied their lads etc and then MU, found that SU was more focused in electronics than MU, which concentrated mostly in power systems. Got the best education I could with limitted resources. Join a MNC as part of the start up team after graduation, relocated to Silicon Valley to do product development and R&D. It was work and graduated EE courses at Stanford for a while until I got involved in a start up company. Some of the products we work on can be found in some museum pieces now.
I am the generation who saw the first silicon transistors as a kid (germanuium before that), design and developed some of the circuits and processes that end up in making the IC chips and computers of the day. The hobby I had became the profession and because of my hobby, I became quite good at it. At the same time, the technology provide jobs to many and help in the economic transformation of a number of countries. Meanwhile I rose to senior management positions in the MNCs in US.
How did Harvard, Stanford and Caltech come in? When my boys were growing up I wanted them to have fun in what they were doing, as I did. They did and became quite good in what they do, good enough to stand out and be recognised by the top universities, to be recruited. They ended up each going to Harvard, Stanford & Caltech.
My point here is, life is not about what we don’t have, it is about what is the best use of the opportunity open to us. If you are from a local university, it does not mean it is hopeless, you have to find ways to be very good in what you want to do. My early interest gave me years of head start compare to others who take up the profession later. Do not blindly follow the advice from the older generation, it is your life, you need to prepare for opportunities they have not thought of yet, let alone tell you what to do.

7.4 earthquake rocks Indonesia’s Aceh, tsunami warning issued :(

Indonesia has issued a tsunami alert after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck near the province of Aceh.

The quake struck offshore, 214km (133 miles) south-east of the provincial capital of Banda Aceh, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

It had a depth of 61.4km (38.2 miles), the USGS said.

The site is very close to that of the 2004 earthquake that triggered the Indian Ocean tsunami, which killed about 220,000 people.

The epicentre was about 66km (41 miles) south-west of Meulaboh district, an area which was devastated in the 26 December 2004 earthquake and tsunami, Indonesia’s earthquake agency said.

The quake hit at 1259 (0559 GMT).

Let’s pray for those misfortune….

Minorities cry foul in Malaysia

Before I further my comment on this topic, I would like to emphasise that this post is not made to annoy any races or ethnics in Malaysia. I support 1 Malaysia which demands “People first, Performance Now!”.

I neither agree nor disagree to the statement “Minorities cry foul in Malaysia”.Why? The simple reason is in some aspects we are treated like 1st class citizen but in other specific aspects we are treated like 2nd class citizen. I am happy in Malaysia and I am proud to be a Malaysian. But, I am worry about Malaysia future.

I believe that there will be a day when each of us says “I am a Malaysian! (not Malay, Chinese or Indian)”. The day, when we break off the barrier of skin colours, believes and cultures, will be the right moment for Malaysia to transform into a First World country.

United State of America had a great success in this issue and I do have some hope on Malaysian – The BolehLand Nation!

Frankly, I don’t care about their personal life. I only DEMAND high quality job performance from them. I do not encourage adultery or sex scandal but these are their private problems which don’t affect their job performance. I want great movie from Jack Neo, I want a hardworking leader like Dr Chua an I want an awesome song from Gillian Chung.

No one in this world doesn’t make a mistake, we need to give chances to them. Even a murderer has his/her chance to obtain amnesty for the death penalty, why not them? Simply because they are public features? Lolz…. ==”

MCA Drama Show

MCA – The politic party, that claims that they represent voices of 6 million Chinese in Malaysia, faces the biggest crisis in March 2010. This is the first MCA AGM which wasn’t attended by Prime Minister in MCA 60-years history.

Series happenings in MCA were just another great TVB drama shows. Unexpected dramatical changes occurred in just few months.

Should i say the story begun from the PKFZ (Port Klang Free Zone) fiasco? May be yes, and maybe not, who knows?Story continues by elimination of Dato Dr. Chua and 2 Extraodinary General Meetings were held. Amazing ultimate result of the EGM was the “fusion” of Dato Ong and Dato Dr. Chua!!! Can I describe this case as a CRAZY and Ridiculous big turning point?

This turning points seems to blow all Dato Liow’s plan provoke Dato Liow and causes Dato Liow’s team to quit for a fresh poll. The help from Dato Dr. Chua makes the success of Dato Liow’s call for re-election. However, Lim Kit Siang said the case was not controlled by anyone from MCA (not Dato Liow nor Dato Dr Chua) but it was controlled by another third party. Who is the third party? Will it be a factor of PKFZ?

You may say “Why I am so concern about MCA? It’s not our problem anymore! xD”. But my answer is “Because I am watching a free live drama show!!! =P”.

Yes, BN won the case! But what is the impact towards Perakians? Do they agree and support this judgment? If they don’t, will BN be the ultimate winner of this case?

Stop using Internet Explorer now!!!

December’s “Operation Aurora” cyber attack from China, which Google disclosed last week, has prompted French and German to recommend against the use of Internet Explorer, at least until a patch is released to address the vulnerability.

This is a great move considering the security risk Microsoft’s Internet Explorer creates. Similar action may be taken against other Microsoft products as well. How does this happen? Microsoft provided the window through which the Chinese hackers crawled through.

“This afternoon, Microsoft issued Security Advisory 979352 to help customers mitigate a Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in Internet Explorer. The company has determined that Internet Explorer was one of the vectors used in targeted and sophisticated attacks targeted against Google and other corporate networks.”

This is a great BANG for Microsoft. It’s a fact that Internet explorer lost its popularity in market. The internet browser battle kicked off for a long time. Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome are more user friendly and load web pages much faster. Besides, tonnes of web developers facing hard time in tweaking their web pages to suite the Internet Explorer.
